US AI policy should be grounded in engineering reality: governance and regulation, safety, privacy and cybersecurity, IP protection, transparency, and a workforce pipeline matched to need.

What they do

Assembles IEEE members with AI expertise to write position statements reflecting consensus views of US-based members, which then guide IEEE-USA advocacy with Congress and federal agencies. The wider IEEE Standards Association runs the IEEE 7000 series of ethics-in-design standards and the Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems.

What a newcomer can do

If you are an IEEE member, email the committee's programme manager (Erica Wissolik, e.wissolik@ieee.org) to ask how to join or contribute to a position statement; read the existing statements first.

Worth knowing

Route in is membership — non-members have essentially no path. Consensus position statements are slow and deliberately moderate; if you want an organisation to say something urgent, this is not the vehicle. The committee page does not spell out the joining process, so email first.
