What it does
RENAMED: was the 'Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC)'; renamed the 'NIST AI Consortium' in May 2026 with scope expanded from safety to 'AI measurement, innovation and adoption', building an AI evaluation ecosystem and promoting US-developed AI. Members join by Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA); existing members had to sign an amendment to continue.

Honest assessment
Organisational membership only — there is no individual public route. Membership gets you into working groups where draft guidance is actually shaped, which is far more influential than commenting from outside, but it requires a CRADA and a demonstrable technical capability. The 2026 rename narrowed the safety framing; groups whose contribution was framed as catastrophic-risk work should expect a cooler reception than those offering evaluation infrastructure.
