Its AI responsibilities

India's central institutional mechanism for AI governance policy development and inter-ministerial coordination. Mandate covers cross-sectoral AI governance, policy alignment across government, and labour-market impacts of AI. This is the seat where an Indian AI law would be shaped before it reaches Cabinet.

Honest assessment

Not usable directly. This is a closed inter-ministerial body of serving officials. Be honest with anyone planning engagement: the only handle an outsider has is RTI (citizens only) or influencing MeitY upstream. Membership of the TPEC is by invitation and the criteria are not published.

Current business

Constituted 16 April 2026. Composed of senior Government of India stakeholders across policy development, science and technology, security and economic affairs. Supported by a Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC) which advises it on global developments, emerging technologies, risks and regulation. Operationalises the India AI Governance Guidelines.

Public route

None. There is no public submission mechanism, no published meeting calendar, no minutes. Indirect routes only: a MeitY consultation, the Parliamentary Standing Committee, or an RTI application to MeitY for AIGEG records.

Format rules

RTI application fee INR 10. RTI is restricted to Indian citizens — foreign nationals cannot file.
