This has become one of the busiest AI-adjacent committees because energy is the binding constraint on AI buildout.

March 2026: Ranking Member Heinrich published an energy-affordability agenda tied to data-center load growth. September 2026: legislation to curb AI data-center utility costs stalled in the Senate (CNBC, 17 Sep 2026). Heinrich is also co-chair of the Senate AI Caucus, so this committee's ranking member is a principal Senate AI actor. Separately, Heinrich, Whitehouse and Van Hollen sent March 2026 letters to AI companies about gas-powered data centers through the Environment and Public Works Committee.
